OK, do you people prefer to play a game that puts you as the main character? Or a game where you control a character?

do you mean as in you make your own character, or play a set one?

I mean play as a set character or play as yourself. So for instance a game that went:
You wake up in a daze
or
Dave woke up in a daze

most games are coded to say 'you' even if it a different character, because you're playing it so effectively it *is* you.

You mean 1st person or third person. It really depends what sort of game I'm playing. If it's a shooter, I'd go for 1st person. If it's an RPG, 1st person too. It all depends what type of game
